Tales of Humiliation: So What Have We Learned?
When I look back on the times I was picked on in school, most of the time I don’t think “man I should’ve pounded that kid”. Partially because they could’ve put me in the hospital but mainly because they were just dumb kids. I should’ve stood up for myself more often but just lashing out in blind retaliation wouldn’t have done anything.
But when I think of the people from all these stories who were older than me - who had more life experience - supposedly more mature, they were people I was looking to for guidance. The teachers in particular have a responsibility to that guidance.
People wonder why some folks have trouble getting past an imaginary little voice inside of them that tells them they’re worthless. And that’s because they remember all the real voices that just came and out said it.
Luckily I have a fiance, family, friends, and a God that drown out that voice and remind that I’m just being a bitch.
