Tales of Humiliation: The Early Years

I went to a very underfunded and legalistic Christian school from kindergarten to 9th grade. I can understand most of the teachers’ frustration since the school didn’t give them much to work with - financially or otherwise.  Teachers’ salaries were so low in fact they had to make do by occasionally hiring psychotic people as teachers.

There was one teacher in 6th grade that felt it was her duty to make sure everyone knew I was a weird kid and a weakling. She denigrated my thought process as “la-la land” and my cartoon drawing and Star Wars Micro Machine collection as wastes of time. She had mandatory “organized recesses” where I was forced to play all of the sports I was awful at every single day. I think she had some deeply rooted issues because she also just looked for excuses to punish people.

Once she showed us a terrible movie about Bible smuggling in Russia produced by Bob Jones University -  giving us a disclaimer that if we laughed at how crappy it was we would be kicked out of class. It was impossible not to laugh and she HAD TO KNOW THAT.
